    (ITV press release. 30 May 2011. itv.com)

At the first auditions, each act (solo or group performers) had to sing in front of one of the show`s production team, who decided whether or not the act was suitable for the next round. Those, who had successfully passed the audition in front of the member of the production team, then went on to perform in front of a senior member of the show`s production team, who decided whether or not the act should go forward in the competition. The successful acts were each given a "gold ticket" to go on to perform in front of the X Factor judges.

Among the thousands who auditioned for X Factor 2011 were four girls, who, at that time, did not know each other:

JESY NELSON; LEIGH-ANNE PINNOCK; JADE THIRLWALL; PERRIE EDWARDS

Each of the four girls auditioned as a solo performer...

  JESY NELSON - AUDITION

Jesy Nelson said her mother, Janis, who "pushed me to audition (for X Factor), I`d never have done it otherwise". (Grazia. 31 Dec 2011).
Jesy and her mother, Janis, went to the X Factor auditions in London (The Mirror. 11 Dec 2011), at 02 Arena on 6, 7, 8 and 9 July 2012
(ITV Press Release. itv.com. 30 May 2011), but Jesy came close to pulling out of the competition before she had even performed.
Jesy
recalled: "I remember standing in the X Factor queue with the thousands who`d been there from 6am, I was saying "Please Mum, let`s go home, I`m never going to get through". She said, "We`re in the queue now, we`re doing it" " (Daily Mail. 10 Dec 2011).
Jesy auditioned in front of the show`s producers in London, and made it through to the next stage - performing in front of the judges.
   Jesy
performed
Jazmine Sullivan`s Bust Your Windows in front of the four judges and she got "yeses" from Louis Walsh, Tulisa Contostavlos, and Kelly Rowland, but she got a "no"from Gary Barlow. But, with three "yeses", Jesy was through to bootcamp
. (Ready To Fly. Little Mix autobiography. Harper Collins.2012)

 LEIGH-ANNE PINNOCK - AUDITION

Leigh-Anne Pinnock sent off her application to audition for X Factor 2011 (Ready To Fly. Little Mix autobiography. Harper Collins.2012),

but Leigh-Anne`s mother, Debbie, said, "My perception of the show was that hundreds of thousands of people turn up and that they seem to pick silly ones who are funny on telly. But I realised if she didn`t give it a go, she wouldn`t be happy." (The Sun. 10 Dec 2011)
Leigh-Anne went to X Factor auditions in London (Harlington Community School newsletter May-July 2011), at the O2 Arena held on 6, 7, 8 and 9 July 2011 (ITV Press Release. 30 May 2011. itv.com).
Leigh-Anne auditioned in front of the show`s producers and made it through to the next stage - performing in front of the judges.
Leigh-Anne performed Rihanna`s Only Girl In The World, and Summertime (from Porgy & Bess, written in 1935 by Gershwin and recorded by Ella Fitzgerald in 1957 wikipedia.com) in front the judges, who gave her four "yeses" and Leigh-Anne was through to bootcamp (Ready To Fly. Little Mix autobiography. Harper Collins.2012)
.
Leigh-Anne recalled, at her audition, "I was ill and I thought "I`m never going to get through" but I went out there and just went for it."
(Bucks Free Press.
10 Jan 2012).

 JADE THIRLWALL - AUDITION

Jade Thirlwall sent off her application to audition for X Factor 2011,
but when Jade told her mother, Norma, that she had applied, Norma was concerned, as Jade had previously auditioned for X Factor in 2008 and in 2010, but both times, she had only got as far as bootcamp before being sent home. Norma recalled, "I was worried about rejection when she said she wanted to audition for a third time. The first two times were so stressful, I didn`t know if she
, or even I, could bear to go through it again. But she begged me, saying "Mum, it`s something I have to do. I`ve got to get it out of my system"" (The Sun. 10 Dec 2011).
Jade auditioned for X Factor 2011 in Birmingham, at the LG Arena on 1 and 2 June 2011 (ITV Press Release. 30 May 2011. itv.com),
Jade auditioned in front of the show`s producers,
and made it through to the next stage - performing in front of the judges.
Jade performed The Beatles` I Want To Hold Your Hand in front of the judges, who gave Jade four "yeses" and Jade was through to bootcamp
(Ready To Fly. Little Mix autobiography. Harper Collins.2012).

 PERRIE EDWARDS - AUDITION

Perrie Edwards did not send off the application for her to audition, and did not want to audition for X Factor.
Perrie`s mother, Debbie, explained: "She (Perrie) never wanted to do it. She thought she wasn`t good enough. I put the application in and told her she was going because I was taking her." (New. 31 Oct 2011). But Perrie didn`t want to go, as Debbie said: "I told her I was taking her to the audition and she said "I`m not going". So I said if she did,  I`d get her an i-phone. (The Sun. 10 Dec 2011).

X Factor auditions, due to have been held in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, were cancelled (Ready To Fly. Little Mix autobiography. Harper Collins. 2012), so Perrie auditioned for X Factor in Glasgow, Scotland (Daily Record, Scotland. 25 Nov 2011), where auditions were held at the Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre on 9 June 2011. (ITV Press Release. itv com. 30 May 2011).
Perrie auditioned in front of the show`s producers in Glasgow and made it through to the next stage - performing in front of the judges.
Perrie performed Alanis Morisette`s You Oughta Know and Beyonce`s Ave Maria in front of the four judges, who gave Perrie four "yeses" and Perrie was through to bootcamp
. (Ready To Fly. Little Mix autobiography. Harper Collins. 2012).
